cable box and remoteCable companies are challenging a law in the state of Maine that requires them to offer channels that the cable user actually wants versus forcing their customers to accept a bundle of stations.

The Parents Television Council (PTC) supports the legislation that the cable industry is attempting to kill in the courts. PTC's Melissa Henson says the situation is quite unique.

"They are not only forcing cable providers to unbundle cable channels, but to make it possible for you to buy individual episodes, individual pieces of programming so you can buy individual shows on an a la carte basis," Henson explains. "The cable industry is fighting that tooth and nail."

The PTC will be watching this situation carefully.

"It's a very interesting sort of trial balloon, and we will be very interested to see if other states follow suit," Henson tells OneNewsNow.

Henson, Melissa (PTC)She also notes that this fight in Maine is happening as the cable industry is in flux with more people cutting the cable cord and switching to streaming services

"That's sort of already in a sense addressing the cable choice problem, but one of the issues that I think we're going to find very soon is that sometimes they're trying to push you back into just a different kind of a bundle," Henson adds.
